about

"The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." -- Hunter S. Thompson.

Jimmy Winchell gives us a scathing rebuke of the music business. James Jimmy Winchell, was at the height of his popularity when the High FI days and sleepless nights of surviving as a rock and roll performer on the road came crashing down upon him. At just 25 years old he woke up one day and while still feeling the effects of a night bender on the sunset strip realized all at once that he too was a victim of A&R Hit Man and that he had been chewed up and spit out by "the machine". "I realized I was just a pawn in the game, and they had played me. said Winchell by phone from the poolside lounge at the Whispering Breeze Recovery Center in Orange County CA. But, what the fuck else am I going to do, Ive got to keep pushing myself and breaking down barriers so maybe the younger musicians coming up after me will see what happened to me and Jim Crotche, Michael, Elvis, Billy Joel, Prince, and John Cougar and maybe not sign that dotted line so fast.

Now that Winchell has signed on with Priapus Records he seems confident things will get better for him, despite being relegated by his former label Polymer to only doing cover songs .

"I mean it kind of sucks (covers only) because, I can't show my deep down true creative form, but I suppose by making these thematic cover song albums and tying to conceptualize my life through other prople's songs and I twist it, spin it and re-frame it for my fans. I feel like that act, of me doing my thing, on my terms, im talking about my thing, its what I want to do, my thing, this thing they call life.........I mean is that really truely living? no its fantasyland bro, (Deplane Deplane) said Winchell Just sipping on tropical cocktails off on a tropico island listening to reggae with Chris Blackwell and doing lines of blow off of the natives titties? Im not saying its not a good time, but I've realized its not everything."

about

Jimmy Winchell Baltimore, Maryland

Jimmy Winchell is a rock legend and cautionary tale. His career was derailed by drugs, women and a ruthless record label. A lawsuit brought by his own management team stripped him of all publishing and copyright ownership + banned him from creating any original music. He redirected this energy into a series of thematic cover song albums on such topics as cocaine, wanderlust, and redemption. ... more
